| Lakers at Suns Game Day Post 12/28/09 |
[Dec. 28th, 2009|12:39 am] |
The Lakers finish up a 2 game road trip with a visit to Phoenix.
The holidays haven't been very happy for the Lakers. A tough loss at home to the Cavs that infuriated players and fans, plus an injury to forward Ron Artest, means the year is coming to a rough end for Los Angeles.
The Artest-less Lakers are coming off an overtime win against a scrappy Sacramento Kings team, a game where Kobe Bryant had a strain that made his right (shooting) arm go numb late in the 3rd quarter.
Bryant is expected to play Monday, Ron Artest is day-to-day with a concussion and could miss his second straight game.
Phoenix is looking to rebound from a tough loss to Golden State Saturday, and losing 3 of their last 4 games, their opponents averaging 112.8 points and shooting 49.1% from the field.
Phoenix committed an uncharacteristic 21 turnovers to Golden State Saturday, and Amare Stoudemire had one of his worst games of the season, scoring only 9 points and plagued by foul trouble..
This will be the third meeting between the two teams, the Lakers easily won the first two meetings. Expect the Suns to play better on their home court. The Lakers will need to control tempo to keep the Suns out of their run-and-gun comfort zone. Also, the Laker bigs will need to control the paint, and they will need to be sharp with their perimeter defense and run the Suns off the 3-point line. Andrew Bynum, who has been in a funk of late, will also need to step up. The small ball Suns should be just what he needs to play big, his last two games against Phoenix were very good, with Bynum averaging 19.5 points and 10;5 rebounds in the previous two meetings.

| Holiday accident sidelines Ron Artest |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|02:07 am] |
Lakers forward Artest suffers concussion after taking tumble at home
Ron Artest could not play in Saturday's game against the Sacramento Kings because of a concussion suffered after he tumbled down some stairs while carrying boxes at his home Christmas night. It was not immediately certain how many more games he might miss. Lakers coach Phil Jackson said he hoped Artest could rejoin the team for today's practice and play in Monday's game against the Suns in Phoenix. Officially, the Lakers listed Artest as day-to-day. A neurologist examined Artest on Saturday, and will continue to monitor the small forward's condition daily until he is cleared to return to the active roster. Artest was treated at the emergency room at UCLA Medical Center hours after Friday's loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers at Staples Center. He received stitches to close wounds on the back of his head and on his left elbow.
A CT scan also was performed, and Artest was sent home for the night. He did not accompany the team for its chartered flight Saturday morning to Sacramento. The Lakers will travel this morning to Phoenix, where they are scheduled to practice. Jackson said he did not speak to Artest. "I think he'll be in Phoenix," Jackson said. "I'm not sure, but I'm anticipating his desire to be there in Phoenix. Obviously, there's some secondary tests that were done (Saturday) after some initial testing was done (Friday) night. "They'll probably have another one Monday or even (today)" Asked for his interpretation of what happened, Jackson smiled. "Let's see, my interpretation is that an accident happened and he fell down and it was something where he ended up in the hospital and he came out of it with some stitches and he's recovering," Jackson said before Saturday's game. When a reporter said, "That's what the press release said. We want to know what really happened," Jackson responded, "I can't add anything to it." Jackson declined to name Artest's replacement. It turned out to be Lamar Odom, who started for the first time alongside Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol, giving the Lakers a mammoth front line of the 6-foot-10 Odom and 7-footers Bynum and Gasol. "What I told them this afternoon when we had our shootaround was that he brings a certain physical presence and we'll miss that part of his game," Jackson said he told the Lakers about playing without Artest for the first time this season. "I spoke to some people involved, but we think he's doing pretty good." Artest is averaging 12.3 points and 4.8rebounds in 28 games this season, his first with the Lakers since signing a five-year, $34 million contract last summer. Walton update Perhaps the most logical replacement for Artest would be Luke Walton, but Walton continues to be sidelined by a pinched nerve in his back. Walton has made strides in recent weeks, and said he hopes to return to the practice court next week. "It (stinks)," Walton said of sitting out while the Lakers were shorthanded. "It's frustrating. It's long. I mean, I walk around the house and feel good, but you've got to feel a lot better than good in this league." Walton has played only nine games this season.

| Lakers at Kings: Game Day Post 12/26/09 |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|01:51 am] |
There's no rest for the Lakers, who travel to Sacramento to face the Kings in a Boxing day showdown with their old division rivals.
The Lakers will need to rebound from a disappointing show in their Christmas matchup against the Cavs, which snapped their 5 game win streak.
The Lakers performance left a lot to be desired, but it was the officiating that drew the ire of players and fans alike. Lamar was ejected in the closing minutes, and the Lakers tallied 5 technical fouls. Fans booed and tossed foam fingers. Phil Jackson even commented that "it wasn't a well officiated game," a comment that is sure to draw a fine from the league.
The Lakers will look to bounce back tonight against the surprising Kings.
The Kings, a team left for dead at the beginning of the season, have surprised doubters with their solid play and the performance of Rookie of the Year candidate Tyreke Evans, who leads their much improved offense. The Kings are #5 in the league in scoring and 10-4 at home so far this season.
Evans is coming off his best performance of the season, racking up 28 points Wednesday night against Cleveland.
Key for the Lakers will be energy, they will have to match the Kings, a tough task considering the big minutes their starters played in last nights game. Also key will be the bench, who have underperformed lately. They will need to step up and help the defense limit Evans. Also important will be the Lakers bigs, who will need to dominate in the paint.

| Cavaliers at Lakers: Game Day Post, Christmas Day |
[Dec. 25th, 2009|12:54 am] |
The Lakers play their 11th consecutive Christmas day game with a matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers, featuring the 2 top vote getters in the NBA All-Star balloting, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.
While the Christmas day game is usually a matchup of rivals, like last years Lakers-Celtics match, this years game, instead, features the 2 biggest names in the league, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.
The Lakers are on a roll, winning their last 5 games. Cleveland has won their last two, including an overtime win in Sacramento, where the Cavs pitched a shutout, the first team to hold an opponent to 0 point in OT since the Pacers did against the Grizzlies back in 2000.
However, the Cavs have had some hiccups on the road, including a lackluster loss in Houston where only one Cavs player scored double figures, that player, of course, being James, and their offense was out of sync in another recent road loss against the Mavericks.
Tonight, you can expect the Cavaliers to make an effort to cut down on the mistakes that have hurt them on the road. The Lakers will need to be sharp on defense to contain point guard Mo Williams, and expect to see both Kobe and Ron defending LeBron James. The Lakers front line will also need to be sharp if they want to limit both Shaq and Ilgauskas. Andrew Bynum, in particular, will need to have a good game, and work to limit the foul trouble that was a problem in the Lakers last road trip. The Lakers should also take advantage of the Cavs subpar pick-and-roll defense.

| Arena's reportedly kept guns in locker room |
[Dec. 24th, 2009|06:49 pm] |
Wizards say Arenas had firearms in lockerWashington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas stored unloaded firearms in a container in his locker, according to the team, and the NBA is looking into the situation. The Wizards issued a statement Thursday night saying there was no ammunition in the locked container, and Arenas and the team have notified authorities and the league. Officer Quintin Peterson, a spokesman for the Washington D.C. police department, said Thursday night there was no report of any active investigation involving Arenas. The team and the three-time All-Star "are cooperating fully with law enforcement during its review of this matter and will have no further comment at this time," according to the Wizards' statement. CBSSportsline.com first reported the investigation. Wizards spokesman Scott Hall wouldn't say when or where Arenas had the firearms in his locker. The NBA's collective bargaining agreement allows for players to legally possess firearms but prohibits them at league facilities or when traveling on any league-related business. "We're aware of the situation and are working to gain a full understanding of the facts and relevant legal issues," the NBA said in a release. Arenas scored 18 points in Washington's 109-97 victory at Milwaukee on Wednesday night. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Arenas is averaging 22.2 points after being limited to 15 games during the past two seasons following three operations on his left knee over 1 1/2 years. Arenas, who turns 28 on Jan. 6 and is in the second season of an $111 million, six-year contract, is one of the NBA's most popular players, but the series of injuries has limited his time on the court. Nicknamed Agent Zero, he has a career average of 22.7 points over nine seasons in the NBA. Sauce |

| Lakers Gasol reach 3 year extension |
[Dec. 23rd, 2009|07:10 pm] |
Gasol gets 3-year extension with LakersEL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP)—Pau Gasol(notes) knows he surprised nobody by agreeing to a three-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers nearly two seasons before it kicks in.
After a rough start to his NBA career in Memphis, the Spanish 7-footer had been vocal about his desire to stick with the defending champions well into the future. And after nearly two years in Hollywood as Kobe Bryant’s(notes) best supporting player, Gasol thinks Bryant will follow his lead this time.
“It gives me tremendous peace of mind and safety and confidence,” Gasol said Wednesday at the Lakers’ training complex. “We have a tremendous team, and we all want the same thing. We want to be the best team out there. It’s a great thing as a player to be a part of something this special.”
Gasol’s deal extends through the 2013-14 season, and could be worth more than $60 million depending on future salary caps.
Gasol has been to two NBA finals since joining the Lakers on Feb. 1, 2008, in a trade with the Grizzlies that propelled Los Angeles back into the league’s elite. His impact on the Lakers has been undeniable: The club is an astonishing 101-23 in regular-season games with Gasol in the lineup, and Bryant anointed Gasol as basketball’s best big man after Tuesday night’s win over Oklahoma City.
“With the way we play, with the players we have on our team, I can’t imagine a big man who would be better to play for this team than Pau,” Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said.
A superb rebounder, a solid low-post defender and a dependable No. 2 scoring option alongside Bryant, Gasol earned an All-Star berth and averaged 18.9 points and 9.6 rebounds last season as Los Angeles won its 15th NBA title. His numbers are nearly the same this season despite missing the first 11 games with an injured right hamstring.

| Thunder at Lakers: Game Day Post 12/22/09 |
[Dec. 22nd, 2009|03:48 am] |
The Lakers return home to face the Thunder.
The Lakers look to continue their dominance of the former Supersonics, having already won the both match-ups between the two clubs so far this season. The Lakers have also won their last 6 meetings with the Thunder at Staples Center.
The Thunder have dropped 4 of their last 5 games. Star forward Kevin Durant has been inconsistent lately, scoring a season low 12 points in a loss to Dallas, but matching his season average Friday night against Detroit.
In their last two games, the Lakers have given more playing time to some of the bench mob, with Morrison, Powell and Mbenga all seeing court time, partly to rest players at the end of back-to-back games, but also to make sure they could be ready when they're called upon.
Key for the Lakers will be to contain Kevin Durant. Look for Ron Artest to draw the assignment of defender Durant. The Laker guards will have to keep up with the quick Russell Westbrook and disrupt his transition game. And, also important, the Lakers need to dominate in the paint with scoring, rebounding and defense.

| Lakers at Nets: Game Day Post 12/19/09 |
[Dec. 19th, 2009|02:53 am] |
The Lakers continue their road trip with a visit to the struggling New Jersey Nets.
While the coaches have changed in NJ, the team is much the same. While they now have 2 wins under their belts, they continue to hold the worst record in the NBA, and still struggle in most aspects of their game, including defense, 3-point percentage, rebounding, and are in the midst of a 6 game losing streak, including a 118-95 loss against the Toronto Raptors on Friday night, a game in which they were down by as much as 40 points in the 4th quarter.
The Lakers are looking to continue a two game win streak, having had their 11 game streak snapped by the Jazz in the first game of their current road trip. The Lakers come in off a 107-106 OT win against the Milwaukee Bucks, ending the Bucks streak of 2 straight wins against the Lakers at the Bradley Center.
Keys for the Lakers will be to not play complacent ball, keep up their defensive intensity and work to put the Nets away early.
In their last meeting on Nov. 29, the Lakers defeated the Nets 106-87.
This will be game 1 of a back-to-back for the Lakers, with L.A. playing Sunday night in Detroit.

| Lakers at Bucks: Game Day Post 12/16/09 |
[Dec. 16th, 2009|03:55 am] |
Kobe Bryant's broken finger didn't seem to give him much of a problem Tuesday night, he dropped a season high 42 points on 15-26 shooting in the Lakers 96-87 win.
The road trip continues Wednesday night with a visit to the Bradley Center to play the much improved Bucks.
The Bucks have won the last two meeting against the Lakers at the Bradley Center, a trend the Lakers will look to change.
Hampered by injuries early on, the Bucks now have their star guard Michael Redd, sidelined since Nov. 27 with a sprained left patella tendon, back, he returned Saturday night against the Portland Trailblazers, playing 29 minutes and finishing with 11 points. Rookie sensation Brandon Jennings is also playing through injury, wearing a brace on his hyperextended knee. Jennings has help the Bucks hold it's own despite injuries to key players.
Keys for the Lakers will be to contain the Bucks big men. In their last 3 games, center Andrew Bogut and PF Ersan Ilyasova have scored in double digits and been big on the boards. The Lakers will need to establish their dominance in the paint. Also, the Lakers must guard the perimeter, especially Jennings, who leads the Bucks in 3 point percentage. The Lakers also need to take care of the ball, the Bucks are 3rd in the league in forcing opponent turnovers.

| Lakers at Bulls: Game Day Post 12/15/09 |
[Dec. 15th, 2009|03:29 am] |
The Lakers continue their longest road trip of the season with a stop in the Windy City.
The Lakers are looking to bounce back from a loss at Utah where the Jazz got a little payback for their blowout loss last week. A game against the struggling Bulls might be just what the Lakers need to get back on the winning track.
The Lakers will still have some challenges. Kobe Bryant will be playing in a splint to protect his broken index finger, an injury suffered in the Lakers home win over the Timberwolves Friday. The finger, and a stomach bug which led to him having to receive IV fluids, had a negative impact on him in Saturday's game, where he finished with a season low 16 points.
While the start of the road trip was rough, the rest should be less difficult. with the remaining 4 games against teams with sub-.500 records. The Lakers have won 5 straight games against the Bulls, the last win on Nov. 19 began Chicago's current 2-12 slide. Chicago has struggled with long-range shooting and defense.
The Lakers will have several advantages over Chicago, with more scoring options, better team defense, and more size in the paint. The Lakers will need to take advantage of their size. Also, the rest of the team will have to be able to step up in case Kobe's injured finger gives him trouble.
